What’s stopping efficient UK manufacturing?

A good read, and an important one for UK manufacturing. Leading business groups have proposed a national manufacturing upgrade programme for the government to include in future industrial strategy.

The report argues that improving the performance of manufacturing is essential to re-balance the UK economy’s north/south divide and that, whilst the best manufacturers are improving their energy efficiency by 50% over ten years, the rest only achieve 10-15%. Jointly signed by the British Chamber of Commerce, North West Business Leaders Team, TUC, Institute of Manufacturing, the Association for the Conservation of Energy and Green Alliance, the report identifies faulty signals on current and future costs, and a lack of strategic insight on resource issues, means opportunities are not being realised.
